But nerds have the social awkward overtone. Geeks do not. Geeks can do quite fine in social settings and don't always fall to "OMG That was such a dork thing to say! I'm such a dweeb!" Nerds have to work a little bit more at the whole social thing.Juleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17577552323514662159noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3133471935209866239.post-79413943828486766932010-09-18T10:35:04.450-07:002010-09-18T10:35:04.450-07:00Amazing... I was talking about this exact thing yesterday with one friend, and laughing about that Venn Diagram with another.

Second friend = new coworker. We bonded a bit over nerd things when he gave me a lift to the train. I was admitting my Doctor Who obsession and he admitted his GTA. His brother poked fun at his posters - including ones he had made! Told him, "naw man, embrace it!" I HAD to tell him about Node and he's excited about it. Towards the end we laughed at the diagram.

Cue to first friend whom I was chatting to shortly afterward, described the diagram and she said...
"Ha ha you're such a geek"
"No I'm not, I'm a nerd"
"What's the difference?"
"Not entirely sure, I have friends I consider geeks - I just consider myself a nerd"

I don't even know how to explain it, and sure I've thrown in geek sometimes, but nerd is my preferred.

I've been interested in science since I was really little. I had a subscription to National Geographic World (for kids). Started watching horror movies around 12 (after I got over my nightmares). Read compulsively about human behaviour and how the world works. I've always been a fan of Sci-Fi and genre type entertainment.

Yet it wasn't until this past summer that I really embraced it. Not that I've ever had an issue with it, I think it was more of a realization that I relate best to others with the same label. And I'm loving it! :)

Something else I've realized... friends that may not consider themselves nerds, can "nerd" out on certain things. Which would make sense why they are my friends and I can relate to them!

Thanks for the post, it was great timing!Miz Lizhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04671388574541963678noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3133471935209866239.post-10828133701760508312010-09-18T01:35:13.678-07:002010-09-18T01:35:13.678-07:00I love that diagram! I personally don't agree with the definitions either (obviously) but it surprises me that others consider there to be a huge difference between geek and nerd in the first place. I really never even thought about it before recently.Shinyswootshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17515947540985859545noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3133471935209866239.post-35827690851502426992010-09-17T23:51:02.508-07:002010-09-17T23:51:02.508-07:00I'm a nerd. I was never teased by my peers for being an intellectual, etc. It was my family who gave it to me.

And I do not agree with those definitions. I think this Venn Diagram best explains it:

http://www.wanderinggoblin.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/Geek-Venn-Diagram.jpgJuleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17577552323514662159noreply@blogger.com
